This 5-class course is our flagship program and recommended for all beginners. Students will learn every step in the fly fishing process AND be presented with their very own new fly rod and reel at graduation ($500 retail value)!
From packing up the car to getting off the water, we ensure you are prepared to handle the entire process and everything in between! All equipment (rod, reel, flies, tippet) is provided for students. Waders and boots will need to be purchased prior to the on the water sessions.
Class breakdown:
1 - Classroom (2 hrs): Expectations/requirements. Intro to fly fishing. Introduce materials, equipment, supplies. Do’s/Don'ts before you get to the water. All classroom sessions will take place in a conference room in midtown Reno with plenty of room for practicing, and safely distancing.
2 - Classroom (2 hrs): “Nuts about Knots!” Learn the 3 knots to get you going. Teach 3 styles: Indicator | Streamer | Tight-line/High-Sticking Guest instructors from all over the world!
3 - Field class (3 hrs): This is the first lesson on the water! All field classes will take place on the Truckee River between Verdi and Reno. This is a hands-on class. Students should be dressed for the elements, ready to fish! During the action packed 3 hours, we will cover:
Approaching the river
Bug lifecycle
Fish lifecycle
Respecting the river
Reading the water
Basics of fly-fishing
The cast
The eat
The set
The net
The release
4 - Field Class (3 hrs): Leveraging what was learned in lesson 2 & 3, we will focus on 3 styles of fishing the river. Students will practice all three to start but will then start to select their favorite style of the three that best suits them.
5 - Graduation & Field class: (4 hrs): Upon completion of The Fly Fishing Academy, each student will be presented with a brand-new fly fishing set up (rod, reel, line) of their choice! Once the new best friend has been selected and spooled up, it’s time to spend 3 hours on the water with an instructor demonstrating all the recently acquired knowledge. Refreshments and swag to celebrate!
The Academy 2.0
We get it, you clicked on the Facebook ad, ordered all the gear, but now that you are on the river, the fish are not biting! Maybe it’s just been several years since you’ve put the waders on, but you have the gear and just need a refresher along with any new tips and tricks. Or maybe, you’re catching fish but never learned why the fish are eating what and when. If any of the above scenarios above sound familiar, The Academy 2.0 is for you!
